Slot machines have come a long way since their conception, when they were clunking three slot contraptions that were dull at best. However, it shows that from the very first people liked to play them, and they were popular from the start.
Slot machines were invented by Charles Fey, a car mechanic, who saw that while he was fixing cars his customer had nothing to do. He wanted to invent something that would give his customers something to do while their cars were being fixed. To this end he invented the slot machine. The first slot was a three slot contraption with a handle on the side that paid out at 1.5%. When he placed the machine in his shop the response was very enthusiastic, and people started coming to his shop only to play his slot machine. As the lines at the slot grew longer, Fey perceived that he could sell the slot to a local toy manufacturer so that it would be mass marketed to the major casinos.
And the rest is history. The machine was sold, and was marketed to all the casinos in the country. However, the machine was at first seen as something that would serve only to minimize the lines at the more serious games, such as blackjack and poker. These games were very popular at the time, and the casinos saw them as their main source of revenue. However, so great was the popularity of the slots that they began putting up more and more machines.
